iPhoneography: New Year’s Edition

I know I’m a week late on the greeting (but I’m still high off champagne bubbles and optimism) so Happy New Year’s everybody!

In 2013, I have just one simple resolution and that is ‘to be better than before.’

Reflecting on the past, I’ve made my fair share of mistakes.  I’ve been living without direction, like a tumbleweed trying to find roots in a windstorm. And yes I’ve caused some chaos along the way. But the past is the past and I’m ready to move forward.   New Years means a clean slate right?

To become ‘better than before’ I plan to take more risk, be thankful for the little things, and most importantly be an authentic version of myself.  The first step is to care less about what others think and do what makes me happy.  After all I’ve got to live up to my philosophy: ‘Be original, Be honest.’

On the photography end of things ( this this is a photo blog after all)  I simply want to be a ‘better than before’ photographer.   I want to have a sharper eye.  I want to improve my technique. I want to push my creativity.  And most of all, I want to get off my butt and shoot more often.

Here are a few of my iPhoneography favorites from 2012.  And while that was a great year, I’m ready for what’s to come.

Bring it on 2013!

Left to right, top to bottom:

  1. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello at Hakone Gardens.
  2. Ferris wheel silhouette.
  3. So much candy at Party City.
  4. Light hitting my bedroom wall and pillowcase.

As part of my resolution, I’m going to be myself.  And if myself is a little bit weird, then that’s okay with me.  Some of my favorite goofy self portrait shots from the year:

iPhoneography: December Edition

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it every month: “The best camera is the one you have with you.” With that, I present the December installment of my iphoneography series. This was one of my favorite months of the year because…

  • Catching up with old friends over spiced rum (or in my case, tequila.)
  • Twinkly bright light displays.
  • An excuse to break out the novelty adult onesie.  My ‘forever lazy’ is insanely comfy btw.
  • Holiday Creme Brulee Lattes.
  • Drunk Santas… lots of them.
  • Family get together, especially watching kids get excited over presents.
  • And finally, being able to overeat knowing that winter clothing will hide it!

I hope your December was great and that you got all that you wanted (and more.)  My belated Christmas gift to you? These 9 pictures!  Hehe.

Left to right, top to bottom:

  1. Dome of San Jose City Hall at night.
  2. Brick, light, and shadow.
  3. Pretty impressive squat move from a tourist at SJ Christmas in the Park. haha.
  4. Loved the way light was hitting this building in Berkeley, so i flipped it.
  5. Cute bouquet in window light.
  6. Martin Luther King Library entrance.
  7. Vince getting ready to ride the Ferris wheel.
  8. World of Color water show at Disneyland California adventure.
  9. Taking a pit stop at the San Luis Resevoir.

iPhoneography: November Edition

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: “The best camera is the one you have with you.”

I’ve been forcing myself to produce at least one interesting phone pic in a 365 project. Most days it’s been easy when I’m out and about and spot something shiny and new, but on the days that I don’t leave my house (brrrrrrr it’s been cold lately!) things have been challenging. It’s hard to see the everyday in a new way. Especially when that everyday is a tiny 1 bedroom apartment.

But it sure feels great when you nail an image.  Check out the first photo of the inside of a water bottle held up to window lighting. Kinda looks like a sun over a miniature sea scape huh? I love the way the light sparkles on each rib of the water bottle. The huge lens of my dslr could never fit through the small opening of a water bottle.  Shots like this make me grateful for an iPhone.

That and these 8 other photos are my favorite mobile shots from November 2012.  Enjoy!

Left to right, top to bottom

  1. View inside an Aquafina water bottle.
  2. Fall leaf still hanging on to the green of summer.
  3. Learning paramount lighting in my studio photography class.
  4. Bath tub planter in front of Roy’s Station coffee house in San Jose.
  5. Under a street at the Guadalupe River walk.
  6. Fishbone the cat enjoying some denim.
  7. Me, hanging out in my room.
  8. Made some chicken soup (for the soul) from scratch.
  9. Vince in front of the San Jose Tech museum.

iPhoneography: October Edition

“The best camera is the one you have with you.”

I truly truly believe this with every ounce of my being.  You can take great pictures with whatever camera you have.

I’ve been pushing myself to take a picture every single day and though I love my dslr and it’s fancy capabilities, it is just too freaking clunky to carry with me everywhere.  So my iphone saves the day.  It’s small, portable, and ready to go with a single swipe. I can’t believe how far image quality has come with phone cameras. Jeez, I remember taking fuzzy 1 megapixel photos on my nokia back in the day!  And I can’t say enough about all the endless image editing apps out there. With all the possibilities, I’m really hooked on my iphone. My boyfriend jokes that I spend more time on the iphone than with him. And you know what? He is right some days!

Though this website will mostly feature my dslr photography, once a month I’ll feature pictures from my phone.  Here are my favorites from October 2012.

Left to right, top to bottom

  1. Navy medals from a Submariner
  2. My shadow one afternoon
  3. Most rocking inflatable while running the San Jose half marathon.
  4. Church in Santa Cruz
  5. Octodog ramen
  6. Self portrait in a sink
  7. A new necklace of mine.
  8. Bonfire in the San Francisco Mission after the Giants won the world series.
  9. Photo of a stranger at Communication Hill in San Jose.
