50’s Housewife Self Portraits

Amazing light was pouring in through my kitchen window and I just couldn’t ignore it.  So what’s a girl to do when she wants to take pictures but no one’s around? How about some self portrait indulgence?

I decided to go a bit retro, well a lot retro actually.  Years ago I found this polka dot number at a San Diego Salvation Army (for a whopping 5 bucks!) and I knew it would be perfect for the overworked, but happy, 50’s housewife vibe I was going for.  Add a tripod and a remote trigger and we’re good to go.

I just adore everything Pin Up – The perfectly coiffed hair, the cat eyes, and of course the oozing femininity of it all.  Sometimes I wish I could travel back in time and spend my days looking fabulous while cooking dinner with a pound of lard.

But then again, I remember how damn comfortable my sweatpants are.  Oh well, it’s fun to play dress up for just a day.

Hope you enjoy my selfies =)

Music tip.  If you too want to get into a Pin Up inspired mood, check out this mix: Soundtrack for a Modern Pin Up Girl. Go ahead and get your baking a pie va va voom on. Whatever you do, don’t forget the red lipstick.

Julie and Zack

Just wanted to share some photos from an afternoon spent kissing in the rain, channeling the Simpsons, and battling dragons. Oh you know, the usual shenanigans in my apartment.

I had this idea for a photo shoot featuring a ridiculously cute couple getting silly in front of a chalkboard wall. After hearing about their recent engagement (he proposed on the beach!) I knew my old friends Julie and Zack were the perfect couple for my vision.

On top of being ridiculously cute people, they were a blast to photograph. It might have been just 2 dimentional, but Julie and Zack did a great job getting into the chalkboard scenes. Come on, just look at Zack’s fierce face defending his love from a dragon, haha. Mean acting chops I tell ya.

If you’re wondering what the words are behind them mean, it’s the lyrics their song ‘Turn the Lights Down Low’ a soulful song originally written by Bob Marley (and covered by Lauryn Hill.) If you haven’t heard it, do yourself a favor and check it out here.

Oh and the adorable daschund mix that makes a cameo, his name is Marley in honor of their song. How friggin adorable is that? He was a shy pup and I haven’t won him over yet, but I will one day!

Thanks again Julie and Zack for indugling in some imagaination with me. You guys were such a fun couple to photograph–and it’s so easy to see how much love there is for eachother. Congrats on making the 13th year together a lucky one!

iPhoneography: Puppy Edition

Meet Jack. My handsome black and white tuxedo wearing French Bulldog pup.

Since February this guy has turned my world upside down. Whoever said having a puppy was like having a baby was right–furry babies with razor sharp teeth that is.

I’m not gonna lie, I experienced some post partum puppy syndrome with the lifestyle change. Right after the initial ‘omg you’re so cute you can eat my finger and I wouldn’t get mad at you’ phase is the ‘will I have to spend the rest of my life cleaning up poop?’ phase. Forget about sleeping through the night or a social life for a while. Oh and there’s no frustration like finding a stinky brownie surprise to wake you in the morning.

But for all the trouble, one look at those dopey little eyes and I can’t stay mad at him for long.

Truth is, he’s a funny little guy with a lot of personality. He thinks pigeons are bowling pins. He goes gaga over Cheerios. He wrestles with pitbulls like he’s 60 lbs heavier. He turns into a total ham for pretty girls walking down the street. Having him around makes my day brighter. Nothing like coming home to a dog who not only wags his tail but shakes his whole backend when you arrive.

I’ve only known him for a few months, but this is the beginning of a beautiful thing. Enjoy some shots of Jack.

iPhoneography: January Edition

“The best camera is the one you have on you.”   And I truly truly believe that with every ounce of my being.  With that I present the January installment of my iPhonegraphy series. 9 of my favorite photos and a rundown of my month.

This January was a pretty decent, if not a little bit on the slow side.  If I’m gonna be completely honest, I can feel the beginnings of a rut.  Life is going great and I’m so grateful for what I have, but I’m starting to feel a bit restless.  Maybe it has something to do with winter–actually I know it has a lot to do with winter.  But you know the feeling you get when you need to refresh the soul? Breath some new air.  Inject some change.  Yeah I have that feeling.

So my goal for next month is to shake things up. Outkast style like a Polaroid picture.

Who know maybe all I need is a fluffy ball of happiness into my life?  One that barks and poos?  Yes folks, it’s official,  I’m puppy shopping!

It hasn’t been easy choosing.  I’ve visited 10 different animal shelters looking for a furry friend.  And each time my heart breaks when I see a scared little dog that has no idea why he has been abandoned.  That damn Sarah Machlaughlin song replays in my head, “IN THE AAAAARMS OF AN ANGEL.…” and I want to save them all.   But at the same I know I’ve got to be choose wisely because it’s going to be a lifetime commitment.  I’ve come across a few good pups but no mutual magic yet.

This puppy shopping is a lot like dating and I just haven’t met ‘The One’ dog yet.  Maybe Valentines day will change my luck?

Drunk Gummy Bears Celebrate Superbowl

I am so friggin excited about Superbowl today!  Growing up in the Bay Area, I’ve been a 49ers fan for as long as I can remember.  I was just a kid when they won their last Superbowl so I never really got to appreciate them in their prime. This has been a long time coming for us 49er faithful, but the day is here!

I’m looking forward a day of yelling at the TV screen, drinking beer, and eating some excellent BBQ prepared by a friend that collects smokers.   I’m definitely wearing elastic pants for the occasion.  And I’ll be wearing my 49er’s jersey–on the back it says ‘Young’ of course!

My contribution to today’s epic Superbowl party?  Vodka gummy bears.  The recipe is so easy.

  1. Put a 3 lb bag of Haribo gummy bears in a glass bowl.
  2. Pour a 750 ml handle of raspberry vodka over the bears.
  3. Let it sit in the fridge for 2 days.
  4. Enjoy!

Of course, just bears isn’t enough, I had to do it Superbowl style.  Check out my drunk gummy bear snackadium.

Or as I like to call it, GummyBowl 2013.
